 | The end result - good things are happening in the local music scene - at least between the musicians! I would like to thank everyone that came out to the get-together a couple of mondays ago. The amount of people that showed up grew quite a bit and it was great to see some familiar faces that have been supporting local music and this site for a long time, as well as some brand new faces of people we've all heard of and people we all will hear of soon enough! There was a great mixture of well-known local rockers mixing in with a great amount of musicians that are just hitting the scene. I'm hoping that everyone had a great time, as I know damn well a few of us did. We had Jeff Spevak there, from the Democrat and Chronicle, who did a story on the evening. This story even got press and was discussed on 96.5 WCMF's The Break Room for around 25 minutes. The evening started out (for those not there) with a face-to-face and respectful discussion which boiled down to "covers vs. originals"...which I also like to see it as "artist vs. businessman". There is enough written about it where I don't feel the need to go into detail about what was said, but I personally feel that both sides have valid points that, while both being true, do somewhat contradict each other in terms of what people "should" be doing with their music. I spoke with people after the discussion on both sides of things and the best thing I can say about it all, is that most are ok to agree to disagree. The bottom line is that no one should tell anyone else what to do with the music they play. Removing all cover bands from the area would not suddenly make original bands pack people into clubs.
The discussion was good, prompted great response, and I would like to have 1 "discussion topic" per get-together. The idea there is so that we dont revisit the same topic over and over.
There is a lot of complaining from all sides of every argument, but what I don't necessarily see enough of is ideas and solutions on how to fix the problems we all feel are there. It is very easy and obvious to sit there and point out what is wrong. To complain about draw, music selection, venues, venue owners, etc...does NOTHING positive and resolves nothing. Ideas for ways to bring people in to shows (cover and original) as well as ways that bands could better themselves and their promotion are what we should be focusing our attention on. Given that all are musicians, what they are playing really has nothing to do with our COLLECTIVE issues...
Metal bands, classic rock, jazz, country (lots of em!), prog rock, new rock, cover, tribute, solo, duet, 10-piece party band....all were represented there. Last time I was able to list each band individually, this time I don't think I stand a chance so I'm not even going to bother.
All in all it was a great time had by all and the after-party at the Colony open mic was certainly a lot of fun. On that note, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL OPEN MICS. They can be a lot of fun and you get to hear a lot of mixed music!
A special thank you goes out to Jeff and Stu over at SoreThumbRadio for being part of this event. Stu was the one that bought the 5,000 or so pizzas...so a great thank you to him as well. Lisa Inzana also helped out a lot as did Rich Paolatto (the "anti-christ") for taking the side in the discussion that not many would stand up and say.
Most of all, thank you to everyone that not only showed up, but also listened in on SoreThumbRadio, and otherwise help support the local music scene. While on a completely different subject, a part of me has to say it: Peter was certainly smiling down on us that night.
Cheers, and hope to see everyone that was there this time along with more new faces next time! (Hopefully some time in December I'm thinking)
