There are a couple of people that have really been making an effort lately to get involved with the local music scene, and are nice enough to involve RochesterBandInsider.com and work with us to come up with some great new ideas for the local music scene. These people include Jeff and Stu over at SoreThumbRadio, Lisa Inzana, Rich P over at RamFan1 Productions, Geno Grammatico, and Paul Cummings.
I am quite happy to release the first of many ideas from us! This is an idea from Paul Cummings and he was gracious enough to ask us at RochesterBandInsider to be a part of it. Needless to say, after seeing the video, we are 100% behind what he is doing and will make every effort to help out and support it! Of course, the website is really nothing without the support and help from our many members.
Enough babbling from me though...Ladies and Gentlemen, Rochester Band Insider along with SoreThumbRadio would like to present, Mr. Paul Cummings:

Just wanted to take a moment and wish everyone and their families a fantastic Holiday season from rbi! I think in this past year we as a community have made some great progress in discussing concerning issues, getting to know each other, and having some fun while doing it. Hopefully a band or two has seen an increase in attendance as a result of some of our actions here. We certainly hope to continue making progress in many areas and hopefully will get our hands involved in some more activities to help support the music scene as well as the community we live in. It is not a task that can be done by any one person or small group, however as a community of over 300 strong, we can (and have) make a difference. I'd personally like to thank all those who are active members of the website and especially those that have made an extra effort to get out and lead by example in terms of going to live music in the area! The holidays are a great time to rock out and party with friends and family. Always be safe when doing whatever it is you do! We lose too many musicians a year without the help of alcohol and drug-related incidents.
So from the website to you and each of your families - a very happy holidays and great new year!
Joseph's Journey - Fund Raiser for Joseph Parenthais
Joseph was recently diagnosed with an extremely rare disorder called Malignant Infantile Osteoporosis. This disorder causes old bone not to shed away to make room for the new bone growth that happens naturally in children.
Joseph will be traveling to Minnesota to receive a bone marrow transplant when a match is found. Joseph will be required to stay in the hospital for 100 days after his transplant.
The fund raiser is to help pay for his hospital bills.
It will take place at the Straight Home Inn 688 Lexington Ave Rochester, NY 14613-1806 - (585) 458-0020 on Saturday November 21st from 1 p.m. to close. There is a $10 Donation good for food and music

The end result - good things are happening in the local music scene - at least between the musicians! I would like to thank everyone that came out to the get-together a couple of mondays ago. The amount of people that showed up grew quite a bit and it was great to see some familiar faces that have been supporting local music and this site for a long time, as well as some brand new faces of people we've all heard of and people we all will hear of soon enough! There was a great mixture of well-known local rockers mixing in with a great amount of musicians that are just hitting the scene. I'm hoping that everyone had a great time, as I know damn well a few of us did. We had Jeff Spevak there, from the Democrat and Chronicle, who did a story on the evening. This story even got press and was discussed on 96.5 WCMF's The Break Room for around 25 minutes. The evening started out (for those not there) with a face-to-face and respectful discussion which boiled down to "covers vs. originals"...which I also like to see it as "artist vs. businessman". There is enough written about it where I don't feel the need to go into detail about what was said, but I personally feel that both sides have valid points that, while both being true, do somewhat contradict each other in terms of what people "should" be doing with their music. I spoke with people after the discussion on both sides of things and the best thing I can say about it all, is that most are ok to agree to disagree. The bottom line is that no one should tell anyone else what to do with the music they play. Removing all cover bands from the area would not suddenly make original bands pack people into clubs.
The discussion was good, prompted great response, and I would like to have 1 "discussion topic" per get-together. The idea there is so that we dont revisit the same topic over and over.
There is a lot of complaining from all sides of every argument, but what I don't necessarily see enough of is ideas and solutions on how to fix the problems we all feel are there. It is very easy and obvious to sit there and point out what is wrong. To complain about draw, music selection, venues, venue owners, etc...does NOTHING positive and resolves nothing. Ideas for ways to bring people in to shows (cover and original) as well as ways that bands could better themselves and their promotion are what we should be focusing our attention on. Given that all are musicians, what they are playing really has nothing to do with our COLLECTIVE issues...
Metal bands, classic rock, jazz, country (lots of em!), prog rock, new rock, cover, tribute, solo, duet, 10-piece party band....all were represented there. Last time I was able to list each band individually, this time I don't think I stand a chance so I'm not even going to bother.
All in all it was a great time had by all and the after-party at the Colony open mic was certainly a lot of fun. On that note, SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL OPEN MICS. They can be a lot of fun and you get to hear a lot of mixed music!
A special thank you goes out to Jeff and Stu over at SoreThumbRadio for being part of this event. Stu was the one that bought the 5,000 or so pizzas...so a great thank you to him as well. Lisa Inzana also helped out a lot as did Rich Paolatto (the "anti-christ") for taking the side in the discussion that not many would stand up and say.
Most of all, thank you to everyone that not only showed up, but also listened in on SoreThumbRadio, and otherwise help support the local music scene. While on a completely different subject, a part of me has to say it: Peter was certainly smiling down on us that night.
Cheers, and hope to see everyone that was there this time along with more new faces next time! (Hopefully some time in December I'm thinking)
After a brief delay, we have the SoreThumbRadio player up on the site! Its right above our media player that has been there for a while now. Click on it, click on a station, and listen in on some great local Rocehster original music!
The get-together was a great success that spawned media attention on 96.5 WCMF's "The Break Room" as well as in the Democrat and Chronicle thanks to Jeff Spevak who attended and wrote a story about it. I will provide a full write-up on the events that took place right after I get the pictures that were taken of the group!!!!
The 2nd RBI get-together will be happening on Monday, October 12th, at Johnny's Irish Pub on Culver Road. The owner was nice enough to let us use the private party room for any discussions or beer-chugging contests as the case may be. The party starts around 7pm and ALL musicians are invited regardless of whether they are a member of RBI or not.
SoreThumbRadio will be doing a live broadcast from 8-10pm, so even those who can't attend have the ability to listen to whats going on live on the (internet) radio. Jeff Cosco will be doing interviews with people from the crowd so don't miss your chance to be on the air!
Again, this party / meet-n-greet is open to all musicians and we more than welcome new and old faces to the event. So spread the word and lets make this thing a blast like the last one!
There are multiple people and websites trying to make an impact on the Rochester music scene. One in particular is Sore Thumb Radio, lead by a name that many Rochester musicians are familiar with, Jeff Cosco.
While RochesterBandInsider.com is for all musicians and bands, Sore Thumb radio is geared only towards original local music. This is a website and internet radio station that plays only original music 24 hours a day. Jeff hosts weekly live broadcasts at Johnny's Irish Pub every monday evening on one of the 6 stations to pick from. The best part? Everything is free for musicians and bands. Here is a question from their website:
Are you one of those "What are you gonna do for me? people." then: > Your music will played randomly 24/7/365. > A good percentage of the time it will be announced before and/or after, who you are, what the name of the song is, and how to buy it from you. > The player tells them the artist and the song every time a song plays. > Your website and links to where to buy your music will be listed on our web site on the BAND/ARTISTS page. > we run a one hour show of various featured artists 4 times a week. It is one hour of just your music!
These are just a couple of the perks that I can see when browsing through their site. Any original band or music that has not been submitted to Sore Thumb is missing out on completely free advertising, promotion, radio play, etc...
In speaking with Jeff over the weekend, we are going to try and combine our efforts and work together as much as possible in our shared goal of improving the music scenes in and around Rochester.
On top of submitting your material, also be sure to support your fellow musicians by tuning into the station. Whether it be at work or at home, tune in and check out what some of your peers are submitting! Heck you could even request it be played at your local bars (those that have the internet of course).
Check it out and hope you enjoy yet another tool available to musicians in the area!
(Note: There are NO covers played on the station at this time. The reason is that to do this, SoreThumb would need to pay ASCAP/BMI for the rights to air those songs. There simply is not enough benefit to outweigh the cost of adding covers to the playlist. There IS a way you could have a cover, but it involves getting permission or paying your own royalty fees to the song owners. You would need to provide proof of this in order to get on the playlist I would imagine.)
I know a few RBI members took part in this last year and I'm hoping that this time it will be an even greater success. This is a non-profit concert on multiple stages out in fairport to raise money for the Golisano children's hospital. Hope for good weather and certainly tell all your family and friends about the event. It is $10 in advance and $15 at the door to get in. This is an outdoor concert event that is for a really great cause! Hope to see everyone there.
