Rochester Band Insider!
Welcome to the new website and forum for communication and a single place to discuss all that is going on with Rochester's local music scene by those that are a part of it! This site and discussion board is for bands, band members, promoters, sound/light engineers, venue owners, talent agencies, and those that book gigs. Please sign up on the forums if you are one of those mentioned and meet and chat with other locals who are in the Rochester music scene.
Finally!! We are on facebook - Join us!

After a dumb amount of time not having a group on facebook for this site, a few members brought up the idea recently and it seems to have been quite nicely accepted! Many people do not care to login (or stop coming once they forget their password), or do not feel like adding yet another site on their daily internet travel list. The use of this site has declined a bit. Possibly because not much has been going wrong? possibly because we have talked about all their is to talk about? (ok enough sarcasm).

Either way, we now have a group on facebook designed to do pretty much what this site does, only on a site that is visited a lot more. The group is closed, meaning posts inside the group can only be seen by those in the group. The "qualifications" are still the same in that the person should have something to do with the local music scene. I don't check too hard to verify these things, but its nice when your facebook profile pic is of you with your instrument performing!

Once added, please invite your friends that are involved with the music scene in Rochester. Hopefully we can continue to bring up ideas and discussions about ways to improve things around here for the music scene as a whole.

http://www.facebook.com/groups/230281253683133/#!/groups/230281253683133/

Or you can search "Rochester Band Insider" on facebook and this group should show up I hope.

Hope to see a bunch of familiar musicians / RBI'ers there!

The warm weather is here!
Just a reminder to all musicians to make sure you get out and enjoy some of the great live music that Rochester has to offer in the warmer months!! Lots of outdoor events which let a lot of local bands take the stage! Festivals like Lilac Festival, East End Fest, Park Ave Fest, Party in the Park, Labatts Concert Series at RIT, Concerts by the Shore in Charlotte...as well as many outdoor venues which cator to full band or smaller acoustic groups such as Pelicans Nest, Schooners, Bayside, etc...!

These are great opportunities for people to get out, enjoy the weather, and support their local music scene!

Rochester Band Insider hosts their 3rd get-together!!!!
www.RochesterBandInsider.com is a website ONLY for local musicians, agents, and venue owners. It provides a way to interact between verified members involved in the music community. Members range from young garage bands all the way up to top festival headliners from the area.

Occasionally, those involved with the website get together to put a face to the screen name, and of course do what musicians do best - party.

Here is the link to the facebook event - please RSVP through it and invite all your musician friends!!!
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=171640926205419&num_event_invites=0#!/event.php?eid=171640926205419

This time, ... the awesome folks at Lovin' Cup have allowed us to have the event at their place!

Image: http://www.rochesterbandinsider.com/e107_images/newspost_images/rbiparty2.jpg

GUEST SPEAKER - Will O'Riley - current music coordinator and sound engineer at Lovin' Cup will be giving a brief talk about what he looks for when booking a band at Lovin Cup! This will be a short "Do" and "Don't" type of thing that will hopefully be very helpful for those looking to book their band in and around the area! The tips he will give can likely be used across the board to increase your chances at getting booked at venues!

To Summarize:
What: RBI Social Event
When: Thursday, Jan 20th - 7pm
Where: Lovin' Cup - Park Point @ RIT
Who: All involved in local music. Musicians, venue owners, booking agents, photographers, etc...

To clarify a couple things:
1) This event is open to ALL musicians, agents, promoters, venue owners, sound engineers, etc...You do not have to be a member of the website. We encourage all people to invite everyone they know that is involved in the music community.

2) While not banned from coming, we slightly discourage bringing signifcant others or dates, especially in the beginning. Maybe have them meet you there later to pick you up (PLEASE get a DD if you plan on partying!). This is really to encourage the musicians to interact with each other!

3) There is no band association with this event, and there is no "open jam" or anything like that. There will be a small acoustic act performing (this act was booked by the venue before this was even a sparkle of an idea in our heads). A DJ will perform later. The reason a "musician" event is ok with this is that we don't really want to take away from a musician performing, so a DJ provides the perfect way for us to socialize without being rude to any band.

SPECIAL NOTICE: One of our members and fellow musicians (Geoff Dale from Extended Family) is a part owner of "3 Heads Brewing". They have just released some fantastic beers and Lovin Cup is serving them! Lovin' Cup has been nice enough to offer a deal to those of us there for this event!

The only way they will know you are from this event though is if you wear a NAMETAG! Yup, there will be nametags there for you to fill out and wear! Hey, it gets you a discount on drinks!!!!

So in the edited words of Antoine Dodson:
Bring yo band, bring yo sound guy, and bring yo roadie too cause we gonna be socializin with everyone that night. (as long as they are involved in the music scene)!

Winter is coming!
The winter season is upon us! This means a lack of outdoor shows and festivals for many bands, but also a chance to get out to many places and check out live music indoors! There are many great venues around the area and each musician should make it a point to at least check them each out once! Be sure to keep up to date on places like Lovin Cup, Bug Jar, Pineapple Jacks, The Jukebox, Johhnys Irish Pub, and many others! Live music is everywhere and as stated previously - we as musicians can't really expect people to support us if we don't even support each other!
It is nice to see many of the RBI bands getting more gigs, and really building a following! The hard work and dedication that many have put forth seems to be paying off! It is also great to see when fellow-RBI'ers go out to support each other. I can tell you from personal experience that "Hi, I'm _____ from Rochester Band Insider" is a fantastic icebreaker when meeting other musicians from the site or when going to see their bands.
Quite a few bands from the site are also putting out CDs! Be sure to check back to the forums to see about upcoming CD releases, and where to pick up a copy of the album!

On a different note, as winter approaches, many people sometimes leave their cars unlocked to warm them up after a gig. Be careful when doing this as it leaves your equipment wide open for people to take! A band should always have at least 1 person outside watching any of the cars being loaded that are kept unlocked! Just a little public service announcement as in the past couple of months I have seen a few stories of musicians getting their stuff stolen out of their cars and from gigs where equipment is left unattended. Do not think "i'll only be gone a second", becuase that second can turn into a half hour if the right person starts talking to you inside!

Hopefully a RBI get-together will be in the works sometime this winter! Cheers and happy playing!

A slap in the face from East End!
To quote the East End Festival facebook page:
wrote ...
East End Music Festival: So, we are hearing some strong arguments for DJ?Electronica at next year's EEF. Live music fans...please feel free to chime in...how can we make EEF better for ALL?

wrote ...
East End Music Festival Apparently DJ/Electronica is what you want to see/hear at East End.

There comes a time when differences should be set aside for the greater good. Old vs. Young, Covers vs Originals, Metal vs. Everyone else...etc! I think this might be one of those times. Recently while on facebook, I saw a post from the East End Festival that said they are thinking about bringing human CD-players...I mean "DJ's" to East End Festival. I may not like all forms and genres of music, but I'd take a live band playing music I hated over a DJ all day long!

Live music (for the record, pressing play on a cd player doesn't make you a live musician. DJs are no more musicians than the random pedestrian pressing play on his IPOD)....is what made east end MUSIC festival what it is. The live bands that have played there have made it one of the most saught after festivals to play in Rochester for local bands. It is in thanks to the FRIENDS AND FANS of live music that the east end fest is such a success.

Time after time, musicians have been replaced by the cheap alternative of a DJ. More venues would rather turn on the radio or hire some guy with 10,000 downloaded songs than they would pay a few extra bucks to support live music. A lot of local bands now must fight hard to get a spot in even the smaller venues, simply because there are fewer and fewer places to play.

How is it that DJs are even being considered for a live music event! To be a musician you must play an instrument! Is a record player or CD player suddenly seen as an instrument? As I stated, that would mean that every person with the IPOD is suddenly a musician!

Don't get me wrong, there are many talented music producers and DJs. Being a DJ who mixes beats is a talent that does take work to do correctly....however you still aren't a musician. Entertainer? Maybe. Musician? Not a chance.

Statements have been made that say how DJs would bring in many new people to the festival!
1) Do they realize the number of people that DONT want to go to a festival that has DJs?
2) Do they really want the elements associated with DJ and electronic music? (live music fans have enough element on their own, no need for instigation or help from cd-player fans!)

Quite a few people love to speak up on craigslist, or in conversation at a bar, or elsewhere. The East End Fest has already slapped musicians in the face by removing "music" from the official title. To paraphrase a friend: Trying to appeal to EVERYONE only ends up alienating the group that has made EEF a success.

East End Fest - via facebook - has been asking for input! TIME TO SPEAK UP! Any musician worth his or her weight in sh*t should support seeing ANY live music on those stages when compared to a DJ. What is next, putting a jukebox on stage and having people toss quarters into it to hear the song they want instead of a live band?

Make sure the EEF knows how YOU feel on the subject! Get the fans and friends of your bands to speak up and explain that people have NO desire to see a DJ on a live music stage!!! Disagreements about WHO should play those stages should be set aside in favor of making sure those stages are available to some live musician and band!!!!

http://www.facebook.com/eastendfestival <- Friend them and post on their wall that you do NOT want a DJ insulting the live musicians by being given time on a live music stage!!!!!

Let them know that musicians will NOT support an event that we have made popular which is deciding not to support us in return! The stages should have live music, and live music only!

Site being down
I apologize for the inconvenience of the website being down. My entire domain was attacked by hackers. I was away on vacation when it happened and asked that the host company suspend all of my websites until I could come back and clean up the mess. There was a security hole in the website template I use on all my sites...and they found me, and exploited that! Lots of others got hit that use e107 as well.
They released a latest version which takes care of all those security threats, so we should be all set (although have some rebuilding to do like the top logo!)

Just for future security purposes, here is some clarifying:
1) I will never ask for your password. I can't view your password nor would I have any reason to use it. The only thing I can do is change passwords, which I don't need to know your old one for! So if you ever get an email asking you for your password - its not from me!

2) I know we have some lesser-knowledgeable computer users that come here. As a general rule of thumb, you should use a different password for your "play" sites as you do for your "work" sites. In other words, use a different password for this site than you would for your banking website. While I do my best, these are not as secure. I would hate to see someone lose something expensive online as a result of this site being hacked.

3) As a general rule, I try to spell correctly. If you receive a phishing email with a bunch of words that look like someone who took a 1 hour course in English wrote it - it probably isn't me.

So hopefully the problem is completely solved (with no harm done to any member)....Thanks for checking up on the site and continuing to use it!

Cheers and happy playing!

Come support one of our own - Peter Grammatico
From the very beginning of this site, Peter had lended his support. He was one of the guys that would go out to our shows whether he liked our music or not, just to support the musicians on stage. He was an active member of this site and a good friend to many of us. There have been many offers of donations to help pay for this site. I would much rather see those who offered use that money for this memorial!!!
So as not to detract from the true intentions of the event, we will not be considering it an RBI get-together - however please know that many from this site will likey be in attendance. What better way to show our support for someone who devoted much of his life to helping others in the music community than to come together to help the greatest gift a man can give to this world - his children.

Peter was a father, husband, musician, and friend.

Would be great to see many of you in attendance as I'm sure Peter would be smiling ear to ear to know that the musicians and friends from the site that he was an active member from the very beginning, were there to support him and his family in their time of need when he can't be there.

He is still missed by many, and likely will be for a long time to come.

Here are the details:
Please join Chasing Giants, Stranger and the Deborah Magone Band in this fabulous fund raising event to benefit Justin & Jayna Grammatico!

Come rock out for the afternoon with Peter's former bands and band-mates for a good cause and tribute to a great friend!

All donations & proceeds will go to the trust fund has been set up to guarantee a college education for Peter's children.

**Silent Auction items courtesy of: High Falls Brewery, Piranha Sushi Bar and Grill, Rowe Photo, Palmer Foods, Rohrbach Brewing Co., Constellation Wine, & Stutzmans Guitar Center.

Great Music, Food, Drink and more!!!

*** If you're unable to attend but wish to contribute, donations may be sent to the following:

Justin and Jayna Education Fund
56 Appian Drive
Rochester, NY 14606

*Please make checks payable to the: "Justin and Jayna Education Fund"
(I ask again that anyone who has considered or offered to donate to this site instead do so to this fund.)
